Why Swedish dentists recommend at-home teeth whitening instead of the clinic

"We used to recommend clinic bleaching only. Then the chemistry changed."

Whitening at a Swedish dental clinic means a visit for custom trays, a take-home kit with professional-grade gel, and two to three weeks of treatment at home. Effective. Two thousand to five thousand kronor. Results that, if you're honest, start fading within a few months.

Why peroxide built a problem into its own results

The bleaching agents used in professional dental treatments work by oxidising the staining compounds in your enamel. Effective. But the process opens microscopic pores in the enamel surface and, without a remineralisation step, those pores reabsorb staining compounds almost immediately.

That's why results fade. Not a flaw in the treatment — a consequence of stopping at step one.

The sensitivity some people experience is a direct consequence of the bleaching chemistry affecting the dentinal tubules. Stronger concentrations bleach faster and cause more sensitivity. It's a trade-off built into the formula.

The result from a clinic fades faster than it should because repairing the enamel was never part of the strip you used at home.

What PAP changed — and why the strip is now better than the bottle

PAP — phthalimidoperoxycaproic acid — bleaches through a different chemical pathway. No free radicals. Clinical trials show zero sensitivity in 14-day treatment courses.

The more significant shift: with PAP, Hydroxyapatite can be included in the same formula without chemical interference. The mineral your enamel is made from works during the treatment to remineralise the tooth surface. Teeth stronger after the course than before it. That's not possible with peroxide-based formulas.

That is the step home whitening was always missing. It's why dentists who understand what PAP now makes possible recommend it over a clinic visit for most patients.
